Mosaic III - 3-D Substrates

Take your mosaics beyond flat surfaces and into the world of sculptural form.

In this immersive four-week workshop, students will explore how to build and prepare three-dimensional substrates for mosaic application. We’ll cover multiple approaches to creating a stable 3-D base and discuss the best methods for preparing surfaces so glass adheres securely and lasts outdoors. Students may choose to create a 6–8” sphere or heart-shaped sculpture. Throughout the class, we will focus on:
  • Building and shaping a dimensional substrate

  • Surface preparation for long-term durability

  • Selecting appropriate adhesives for glass

  • Designing and working with tesserae scale for curved surfaces

  • Finishing techniques for outdoor display

This class is ideal for students who have basic mosaic experience and are ready to expand into sculptural work. Weeks one and two will focus on the 3-D substrate.  Week 3 students will begin adding glass to substrate.
